NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Elena Vesnina shook off an earthquake and upset Jelena Jankovic 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 on Tuesday at the New Haven Open.

Vesnina was leading 2-0 in the first set and facing two break points on her serve when the quake was felt, forcing an evacuation of the stadium and an over two-hour delay.

Parts of the White House, Capitol and Pentagon were evacuated after the magnitude-5.8 quake, which was centered 40 miles northwest of Richmond, Va.

Vesnina held on to win that set, but dropped the second before rallying and breaking seventh-seeded Jankovic’s serve in the final game of the match.

Earlier, Francesca Schiavone advanced to the third round, cruising to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Monica Niculescu of Romania.
