DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Former FIFA vice president Mohamed bin Hammam says he has appealed his lifetime ban from soccer for election bribery.

Bin Hammam, also the suspended Asian Football Confederation president, wrote on his blog Thursday that he did not expect the FIFA Appeals Committee to overturn his ban but will use that appeal as a step toward bringing his case to the Court of Arbitration of Sport.

Bin Hammam called FIFA’s ruling “deeply flawed” and said he had “grave doubts” whether FIFA’s Appeals Committee is sufficiently independent to ensure a fair decision. He expected the appeal to take about two months.

Last month, FIFA imposed the life ban after finding bin Hammam guilty of bribery in his campaign to replace Sepp Blatter as FIFA president.
