PRIEST LAKE, Idaho (AP) — A Washington state pilot was critically injured after crashing his small plane while trying to land near Priest Lake in northern Idaho.

Bonner County officials say 86-year-old John Hershey of Chattaroy, Wash., was conscious when emergency crews found his wrecked Cessna plane at the Cavanagh Bay airstrip on the south end of Priest Lake in Coolin.

Witnesses say Hershey appeared to be trying to land at about 11 a.m. Tuesday when he lost control and crashed into the trees.

He was airlifted to a Coeur d’Alene hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash.
