CHILOQUIN, Ore. (AP) — The Klamath Tribes of Southern Oregon are observing a quarter century since they were restored to federal recognition, including their traditional hunting and fishing rights. They say the struggle to win that has left wounds that still haven’t healed.

The Herald and News (http://bit.ly/qdPENx ) reports that the tribes are the Klamath, Modoc and Yahooskin. They’re beginning a four-day celebration today in honor of 25th anniversary of the August 1986 federal reinstatement of their tribal status.

Former tribal chairman Chuck Kimbol says that after the United States terminated the tribes, as many as 70 percent of the Klamaths moved from the area.

The termination in 1954 was part of a movement in which Congress removed the tribal status of more than nine dozen tribes.
