LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Last season, Kansas came into the season opener against North Dakota State full of lofty expectations. Turner Gill was the new coach on the sideline and the messy departure of Mark Mangino was in the past.

The Jayhawks wound up on the wrong end of a 6-3 final score.

Kansas will try to avoid a repeat of that opening collapse on Saturday, when they face another school from the Football Championship Subdivision in McNeese State.

Sophomore quarterback Jordan Webb said he doesn’t think much of last year’s debacle at Memorial Stadium, but defensive end Toben Opurum said it’s on most players’ minds.

“No one really likes thinking about it,” Opurum said, “but we know we don’t want that to happen again.”
