VERONA, N.Y. (AP) — Tiger Woods is “honored” to be a captain’s pick for the Presidents Cup.

Woods said “they wanted me on the team and I’m honored.” He was speaking before teeing off Wednesday at a charity event hosted by college roommate Notah Begay III. The former No. 1 player nodded yes when asked if he thought he deserved to be picked.

Fred Couples made Woods one of two captain’s picks for the team even though Woods has been out of golf for much of the summer, missing two majors. Woods has played only eight PGA Tour events this year because of injuries to his left knee and Achilles tendon.

Couples said he wanted Woods to play more before the Australian Open in November, a week before the Presidents Cup.
