Long Beach St. tops cold-shooting BYU-Hawaii 79-43

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Eugene Phelps had 14 points and 13 rebounds and T.J Robinson added 12 points and 14 rebounds as Long Beach State defeated BYU-Hawaii 79-43 on Friday night.

Larry Anderson led the 49ers (4-3) with 16 points, and Casper Ware had 13.

Tsung-Hsien Chang had 16 points for the Seasiders (1-5), who shot just 17 for 48 (35.4 percent) from the floor and were hamstrung by two lengthy scoring droughts in the second half.

Long Beach State, which shot 53.7 percent (29 for 54) for the game, took control with a 10-0 run to start the second half, as BYU-Hawaii went scoreless for the first 4:19 after intermission. Ware and Phelps had four points each during the surge, which made the score 42-28.

The 49ers led 63-41 when the Seasiders began a 6:30 scoreless stretch. Chang hit a jumper with 1:38 remaining to end the skid and complete BYU-Hawaii’s scoring.
