Burning banned in county until further notice

Stagnant weather patterns have prompted the Southwest Clean Air Agency to issue a stage one burn ban in all of Clark County. The ban took effect at 5 p.m. Friday, and will remain in place until further notice.

The ban means that the use of all fireplaces, plus uncertified wood stoves (generally older than 1990) and inserts is prohibited. Outdoor burning is also prohibited during the ban.

If wood burning is a home’s sole source of heat, however, that home is exempt from the ban.

Officials put the ban in place to prevent the risk of unhealthy levels of fine-particle air pollution, according to the clean air agency. If needed, a Stage Two ban would prohibit all wood heating, including certified units.

The stagnant air pattern is expected to continue into next week, according to the clean air agency.
