Newsome lifts Gardner-Webb over Winthrop 62-60

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (AP) -- Tashan Newsome's jumper with 30.2 seconds left gave Gardner-Webb a one-point lead, and the Runnin' Bulldogs held on to beat Winthrop 62-60 on Saturday night.

With Gardner-Webb (4-6, 1-1 Big South Conference) leading 61-60, Reggie Middleton missed a jumper that would have given Winthrop the lead, and Tyler Strange made 1 of 2 free throws for the final margin.

The Eagles had two more chances to win or tie, but Andre Jones' 3-point attempt was off target and knocked out of bounds by Gardner-Webb with 0.4 seconds left. An alley-oop attempt, on the inbounds pass, to George Valentine came up short for Winthrop (2-6, 1-1).

Gardner-Webb led 56-53 with 3:26 to go and Winthrop went on a 7-3 run to lead 60-59 on Jones' 3 with 56 seconds remaining.

Jason Dawson had 16 points for Gardner-Webb and Kevin Hartley added 11.

Jones led Winthrop with 25 points.
