PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Police are arresting anti-Wall Street protesters who are refusing to leave a downtown park.

Sgt. Pete Simpson says several Occupy Portland demonstrators have been arrested but he doesn’t yet have an exact count.

He tells The Associated Press that officers began moving into an area of south park blocks in downtown Portland around 8:30 p.m. Saturday night after the park was shut down a half hour early.

Occupy Portland demonstrators set up tents in the park earlier Saturday and vowed to stay through the winter, defying police who have said overnight camping will not be allowed.

Simpson says the police action is still going on. He says police have dismantled about a dozen tents.

City officials say they shut down a downtown Portland park early Saturday night after protesters confronted park workers.
