Wheeless, Norfolk State edge Savannah State 60-58

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Brandon Wheeless hit a 3-point jumper with 1 second remaining to lift Norfolk State over Savannah State 60-58 on Saturday night.

The senior swingman had turned the ball over with 23 seconds left, leading to two free throws by Savannah State’s Jyles Smith that gave the Tigers a 58-57 lead at the 0:17 mark.

The Spartans (5-3, 1-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) led most of the second half, when senior center Kyle O’Quinn got 13 of his 17 points. O’Quinn also had 10 rebounds, giving him double-doubles in his last seven games.

Jyles Smith’s late free throws capped a 7-0 Savannah State run that also included a three-point play by Rashad Hassan and a layup by Cedric Smith. Hassan led the Tigers (3-6, 1-1) with 17 points.

Norfolk State turned the ball over just 10 times after committing 34 in its previous game, a 69-57 loss to Elizabeth City State.
