EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — A price war at Eugene gas stations has brought the cost of fuel down as low as $3.09, about 45 cents below the statewide average.

Drivers are flocking to the gas stations near Main and 42nd streets.

While many people drove to the stations after learning that per-gallon prices had dropped to $3.09. Others came across the sales by accident.

Workers at the Chevron station says they started dropping their price when they heard about the sale at the 76 station and saw a drop in customers. A manager at the 76 station says what they lose in profits they will make up in volume.

Neither station could say when the sale will end.

AAA says the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Oregon was about $3.55 on Friday. A year ago, it was about $2.99.
