Letter: Congress needs total cleansing

The Columbian
Published: December 4, 2011, 4:00pm

When the members of the deficit supercommittee brought the same baggage and party positions from their 212th dysfunctional Congress, their failure was assured.

Their quest for savings did not include cuts to congressional budgets or benefits; subsidies in the billions of dollars to Big Oil and others remained untouched. The recent news that they excluded themselves from penalties for insider trading says it all.

Congress seems to be oblivious to the civil unrest and the common sense people are telling them; Congress needs to be replaced. Nothing will change until change itself takes place.

Change means publicly funded elections, coupled with spending limits of less than $250,000 per candidate, per election, and term limits. Without these changes, this travesty will continue, as well as the downhill spiral of our country.
