KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghan police say there has been an explosion at a shrine in Kabul and that there are casualties.

Hashmatullah Stanekzai, a spokesman for Kabul police, says the blast at midday on Tuesday occurred at Abul Fazel shrine in the center of the Afghan capital.

He says an unknown number of casualties has been reported. He says it’s not clear if the explosives were planted in the shrine or if the blast was conducted by a suicide bomber.

Afghans were gathered at the shrine for Ashoura, the Shiite Muslim holiday marking the death of Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad.
