DALLAS (AP) — Toronto Sun columnist Bob Elliott has become the first Canadian writer to win the Hall of Fame’s J.G. Taylor Spink Award.

The Baseball Writers’ Association of America announced the award Tuesday at the baseball winter meetings. The 62-year-old Elliott will be honored during the induction ceremonies at Cooperstown in July.

Elliott has spent more than 30 years covering the game in Canada. The annual award is presented for “meritorious contributions to baseball writing.”

Elliott drew 205 votes from the 455 ballots cast. Philadelphia sports writer Paul Hagen was second with 169 and Cleveland writer Russell Schneider was third with 81.
