BEND, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon Department of Transportation spokesman says road crews are using an improved de-icer on roads in the Chemult area, one of the coldest regions in the state.
Spokesman Peter Murphy told KTVZ (http://is.gd/GzgauI ) the new formulation of the standard magnesium chloride is good to about 10 degrees. The old formula was good to about 20 degrees.
Crews spread the de-icer before a snowfall or icy conditions to prevent buildup. The de-icer includes a rust inhibitor to limit damage to cars.
