Ore. board discusses chief education officer post

SALEM, Ore. (AP) -- Gov. John Kitzhaber's education super-board is meeting to decide on a job description for a new position called the chief education officer.

Kitzhaber suggests that the powerful position should oversee all state-funded education programs from birth through college. The Education Investment Board is scheduled to make a decision Wednesday afternoon in Salem.

The board also will discuss a plan to implement Kitzhaber's vision for a board that would direct education funding and policy, sending more money to programs that show better results.

The board is charged with submitting a proposal to lawmakers in time for the legislative session in January.
