Wednesday, December 7, 2011
SALEM, Ore. (AP) -- The state Corrections Department is looking to end a lockdown at the Oregon State Penitentiary as soon as possible.
Spokeswoman Jennifer Black told Statesman Journal (http://is.gd/MIYWC0 ) a lockdown is not ideal for staff or inmates.
Inmates were confined to their cells Monday after a spate of inmate fights. Staffers fired four warning shots and used chemical spray to quell the violence.
The maximum security prison at Salem holds about 2,000 inmates.
