NEWBERG, Ore. (AP) -- Police in Newberg, Ore., say a 20-year-old woman has been flown to a Portland hospital after suffering a rifle shot to the abdomen.
Capt. Jeff Kosmicki says police responded Tuesday to a call about shots being fired and found the injured woman. The officer says the woman had just handed the rifle to a 19-year-old male friend who pulled the trigger, thinking the rifle was unloaded.
The victim was not immediately identified.
Police say the shooting appears unintentional and neither drugs nor alcohol was involved.
Kosmicki says the 19-year-old man was released. The case will be turned over to the Yamhill County district attorney's office for review.
