Letter: Taking a break is good for business

As I was walking around Uptown Village Christmas Eve morning, I noticed that a number of the small businesses located there are closed for a long holiday weekend.

Although this might inconvenience a few shoppers, it’s good to know that the employees are able to enjoy celebrating among family and friends. Whether those celebrating are observing a religious holiday or are gathering purely for enjoyment, the important thing is that everyone has time set apart from the workday world to rest, renew and be with loved ones.

I have friends here in the U.S. from countries whose cultures don’t have a winter holiday similar to Christmas, Hanukkah, Yule or Kwanzaa, yet they too appreciate having a day off and sharing it with others.

A big “thank you” to the establishments that recognize that some days aren’t “business as usual” and that quality time with others is more important than buying a lot of stuff.
