BORMIO, Italy (AP) — Olympic champion Didier Defago of Switzerland won the World Cup downhill Thursday on the bumpy Stelvio course.

Defago finished in 1 minute, 1.81 seconds, to edge fellow Swiss racer Patrick Kueng by 0.29 seconds. Austria’s Klaus Kroell was third, 0.42 back.

American Bode Miller was fifth, 0.78 off the pace.

After a break for New Year’s, the men’s circuit will resume with a slalom in Zagreb, Croatia, on Jan. 5. Then come the classic races at the Swiss resorts of Adelboden and Wengen, followed by the traditional Hahnenkamm downhill in Kitzbuehel, Austria.
