Washougal kids make cards for the troops

Washougal — Military personnel from the Columbia Gorge area who are serving overseas will have a happy new year thanks to Cape Horn-Skye Elementary School students. With the help of the Washougal school’s staff, students created more than 150 handmade cards to send in January as part of a gift package through the Gorge Heroes Club, a nonprofit group based in Hood River, Ore.

Washougal resident Margie Coursey coordinated the card-making project after she heard about the club and its efforts. Coursey gathered donations from friends and purchased supplies for the project. School staff members and students work with Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 122 on events throughout the year.

“We have many military families, and showing our support through partnerships such as this one is an important part of our community,” said Cape Horn-Skye Principal Mary Lou Woody.
