Florida Gulf Coast downs Maine 84-72

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Christophe Varidel had 20 points off the bench to lead five double-figure scorers for Florida Gulf Coast in an 84-72 win against Maine on Thursday night.

Bernard Thompson added 15 points and Dante Holmes 12, while Chase Fieler notched his first career double-double with 11 points and 11 boards for the Eagles (5-7). Brett Comer also chipped in with 10 points.

Varidel knocked down a trio of 3-pointers while going a perfect 7-for-7 at the foul line for the Eagles, who have won back-to-back games.

FGCU shot 30-for-37 from the charity stripe (81.1 percent) compared to an 11-for-20 night (55 percent) for the Black Bears. Entering the game, the Eagles’ season-high for free throws was 19.

The Eagles turned 13 offensive rebounds into a 20-11 edge on second chance points.

Gerald McLemore led Maine (6-5) with a game-high 26 points.
