SEATTLE (AP) — King County is anticipating getting $1 million a year from methane gas created by decomposing garbage in a landfill.
The county already sells the gas produced at its Cedar Hills landfill southeast of Seattle to Puget Sound Energy for about $500,000 a year. PSE uses the gas to generate electricity.
On Monday, the County Council approved an agreement to sell the emissions credits associated with the gas to PSE, which should bring in another $500,000 a year.
The emissions credits are available because the converted methane replaces an equal amount of nonrenewable natural gas.
