Talking Points 02/11

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

1

D.A. Points — no relation to Talking Points — says he generally utters favorite lines from “Caddy-shack” during a normal round. But playing with the movie’s Carl Spackler on Thursday, he decided it might not be so cool to be parroting his idol.

Spackler, of course, is Bill Murray, who arguably has become the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am’s most iconic celebrity since he started playing in the event in the 1990s.

While many pros shudder at the thought of drawing Murray as a partner, Points was ecstatic when he learned Tuesday night of his pairing.

But even for Points, there were a few trying moments. On the par-3 14th, Murray and former San Francisco 49ers tackle Harris Barton both made long birdie putts. Then it was Points’ turn.

“I got up over my putt and he started talking to me about he just made a putt, and how Harris just made a putt, and how easy this should be,” Points said.

He three-putted for his only bogey.

“It didn’t bother me at all,” he said. “I just hit two bad putts.”

Pitcher Armando Gallaraga and umpire Jim Joyce have teamed up to author a book, tracing each of their life stories leading up to the night that the pitcher lost a perfect game on the umpire’s imperfect call.

The book entitled “Nobody’s Perfect” is due out in June.

Galarraga said he enjoyed the experience of working on the project with Joyce. That is until Galarraga came up with a perfect ending to the book, only to have Joyce come in and screw it all up.
