OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Washington lawmakers are debating the use of cameras to snap pictures of people who run red lights.
Bills being considered would tweak state laws on local government use of red-light cameras. One idea would put local red-light camera projects up for a public vote before installing them. A different bill would expand the use of cameras to catch speeders and require local governments to study red-light camera projects before installing them.
Both approaches would standardize the length of yellow lights at traffic signals.
Local activists recently filed initiatives against traffic cameras in four cities around the state. Those campaigns follow last fall’s successful Mukilteo campaign by initiative promoter Tim Eyman to limit ticket fines and require the city to hold a vote before installing cameras.
