Sport show opens on Wednesday

PORTLAND — Exhibits by hundreds of outdoor equipment manufacturers, outfitters, guides, resorts and others will be on display beginning Wednesday at the 36th annual Pacific Northwest Sportsmen’s Show.

At the Portland Expo Center, 2060 N. Marine Drive, the show is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 10 and Feb. 11; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Feb. 12, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Feb. 13.

Admission is $12 cash or $13 credit for adults and $5 for juniors. A coupon for $2 off is available online at www.otshows.com.

Among the seminars will be Jack and Brandon Glass on Columbia River spring chinook, Gary Lewis on smallmouth bass, Ed Iman on walleye, Gary Miralles on trout and kokanee, Eric Linde on fishing the Columbia and Willamette, Dan Kloer on elk bugling, Eddie Shelby on blacktail deer hunting, Peter Kummerfeldt on survival, Randy Flickinger on reloading and David Cousineau on electronic collar training of dogs.

Also at the show will be camp cooking demonstrations, a free trout-fishing pond for youths, a display of trophy big-game horns plus boats and trucks for sale.

Flyfishers meet Feb. 16 in Camas

CAMAS — The Clark-Skamania Flyfishers will meet at 6 p.m. Feb. 16 at Camas Meadows Golf Club, 4105 N.W. Camas Meadows Drive.

The guest speaker will be Glenn Brackett, president of Sweetgrass Rods Co. in Montana, who will discuss bamboo fly rods.

A representative of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife also will discuss aquatic invasive species.

The public is welcome.

Registration open for fly-tying class

Registration is open for the Clark-Skamania Flyfishers’ annual Introduction to Fly Tying class beginning Feb. 15.

The class meets starting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays for six weeks at 7607 N.E. 26th Ave. The cost is $25 and enrollment is limited to 16 students.

Basic tools and materials will be explained. Students will learn to tie about a dozen pattern.

Master hunter enrollment open

OLYMPIA — Applications are being accepted through Feb. 15 for Washington’s master hunter program

The Department of Fish and Wildlife enlists master hunters to participate in controlled hunts to remove problem animals that damage property or threaten public safety.

Applicants must demonstrate a high level of skill and be committed to ethical hunting practices.

Applicants must pay a non-refundable $50 fee, pass a criminal background check, sign a code of ethics and provide at least 20 volunteer hours on wildlife service projects. They also must pass an extensive written exam.

Hunters who enroll should study the materials thoroughly to prepare for the test. Applicants get only one chance to re-take the exam.
