DETROIT (AP) — Nicklas Lidstrom says he’s happy he put retirement on hold. The Detroit Red Wings are, too.

Lidstrom has 44 points in 50 games — not too shabby for a 40-year-old defenseman — for the Central Divison-leading Red Wings.

The four-time Stanley Cup champion and six-time Norris Trophy winner considered a return to Sweden in the fall when his 16-year-old son started school there. But Lidstrom chose to play at least one more NHL season, using Skype to keep in touch with his oldest of four sons.

Hall of Famer Gordie Howe says Lidstrom’s “gentleman’s game” makes him age well in the league.

Lidstrom insists he’ll wait until after the season to decide whether to come back or call it a career.
