PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin slowly skated off the ice and into the locker room on his own power after a collision with Buffalo defenseman Tyler Myers early in the second period on Friday night.
Malkin had missed the previous five games with a left knee injury and sinus infection. The former league scoring champion has missed 10 games in all this season, most related to his knee.
Myers checked Malkin in Buffalo’s left-wing corner and then fell back into him awkwardly, appearing to apply weight onto Malkin’s left knee. Malkin laid on the ice for a few moments before heading to the locker room and the team said he would not return.
Pittsburgh, which also has been without star Sidney Crosby the past 12 games, was 4-1 without Malkin and Crosby. The Penguins are third in the NHL with 70 points.
