Gaines’ 20 help IPFW whip Western Illinois 67-56

MACOMB, Ill. (AP) — Frank Gaines scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead IPFW to a 67-56 victory over Western Illinois on Saturday night.

Ben Botts added 15 points and Jeremy Mixon 12 for the Mastodons (15-8, 9-4 Summit League), who made 8 of 20 3-pointers in sweeping the season series.

Kaimarr Price scored 17 points and Matt Lander 16 to pace the Leathernecks (7-16, 2-10), which dropped its sixth straight.

IPFW shot just 42.0 percent (19 of 45). Western Illinois shot 48.6 percent (18 of 37) but hit only 2 of 8 3-pointers.

The Leathernecks led for the last time at 12-11 before Mixon’s layup with 10:22 left in the first half gave IPFW the lead. An ensuing 15-2 run made it 28-14, and the Mastodons led 34-19 at halftime.

The lead peaked at 23 and never fell below 14 until Lander’s 3-pointer with 47 seconds to go.
