Weather Eye: Where’s our snow? It may cover peaks

It is amazing — while the East Coast shivers with one blast of arctic air after another, our Cascade snow pack continues to dwindle. As of Friday, the central Washington Cascades were only at 60% of normal. A cold front moves in Monday and the Cascades will see at least some new snow — maybe upwards of a foot in the highest points, and extending all the way down to pass levels or below as well.

Then it will be back to higher pressure, with east winds and very mild conditions away from the gorge. The coast will be very nice. Locally, after some rain tonight and a few showers Monday we will enjoy fair weather the rest of ten week with fog in some areas.

Still waiting for winter weather? Longer-range computer models indicate the storm track may once again slide into California and keep us on the cool side of things with lower snow levels. However, the heaviest moisture will be to our south. Sound familiar? That would be for the week of Valentine’s Day. But I don’t have much confidence in the models that far out.

Although it is still early February and we have several weeks of winter left, many people are taking this calm in our weather to think about springtime and sunshine. Little League baseball tryouts are underway, skiers are about ready to hang their equipment up, gardeners are tinkering around in the yard and checking the seed racks in the garden shops. Wild birds are having a frenzy at the backyard feeders and goldfinches are already showing their brilliant yellow hues.

This weatherman removed his studded tires a while back and I must admit I’m looking forward to some warmer weather and perhaps some long walks along the beach. I am not totally writing off winter; I do feel like the mountains will still get a good buildup of the snow pack the latter half of the month and perhaps some good spring snows in March and April.

Meanwhile sports fans, enjoy the game today and I will keep a weather eye on the horizon for you. Enjoy your week.
