A retirement party is planned Wednesday in honor of Lee McCallister, the longtime leader of the Fruit Valley Neighborhood Association.

McCallister took over the group in 1990 when he was appalled at rising crime in the neighborhood; since then, he has become the unsung “Mayor of Fruit Valley.”

Now, McCallister has decided to step down after 21 years of neighborhood leadership. The Vancouver Neighborhoods Alliance will toast him during a special meeting at 7 p.m. today at the west police precinct, 2800 Stapleton Road.

McCallister will receive a plaque from City Councilman Larry Smith. Other dignitaries and neighborhood leaders are expected to attend and pay tribute to McCallister. The event is open to the public.
