SEATTLE (AP) — The Coast Guard says a windsurfer who found himself in need of help when his mast snapped called for help on his cell phone. The agency was able to ask a passing Washington state ferry to sail to the rescue.

Petty Officer Andrew Walter said Monday the unidentified windsurfer was about three-quarters of a mile south of Seattle’s Alki Beach when he ran into trouble Sunday afternoon.

The Coast Guard asked ferry captain Curt Larson for help as his Bremerton to Seattle ferry sailed nearby. Walter tells The Seattle Times that ferry crews sent out an inflatable raft and retrieved the man.
