SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco has much work to do before it is ready to host the America’s Cup in 2013.
The city’s plan for hosting sailing’s premier regatta was released on Wednesday and includes a lengthy to-do list. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the city needs to improve eight piers, dredge channels and raise $270 million from corporate sponsors.
Other details of the city’s vision for hosting the race were also included in the plan. Among them, the city would set up large video screens in Union Square, along the Embarcadero and Justin Herman Plaza for people to watch the race.
San Francisco was picked on Dec. 31 to host the competition for the oldest trophy in international sports, beating out Newport, R.I., and an undisclosed port near Rome.
