Blood infection caused Whatcom baby’s death

BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) — Whatcom County officials say a baby who died over the weekend had a different bacterial illness than meningococcal (muh-NIN-jo-cok-ul) infection.

County health officer Dr. Greg Stern tells The Bellingham Herald that the death has been attributed to a blood infection from Haemophilus influenzae (hee-MOFF-ill-us in-flew-EN-zye). The 8-month-old baby originally was thought to have a meningococcal infection, but tests performed this week determined otherwise.

The health department says the infant appeared to have a mild illness with a cough and runny nose, but deteriorated rapidly in the 12 hours leading to the death on Sunday.
