HOUSTON (AP) — Trey Canard raced to his first career Monster Energy AMA Supercross class victory on Saturday night, beating defending champion Ryan Dungey at Reliant Stadium.

American Honda’s Canard, of Shawnee, Okla., grabbed the lead on lap 10, then held off Dungey, the Rockstar/Makita Suzuki rider from Belle Plaine, Minn., at the line.

Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto, of Poulsbo, Wash., overcame a bad to finish third.

Points leader James Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., and Chad Reed, of Tampa, Fla., got caught up in a mess of riders on the first corner and ended up finishing out of the top 10.

GEICO Honda’s Justin Barcia, of Ochlocknee, Ga., won the 15-lap main event in the Supercross Lites Eastern Regional Championship.
