MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota players say they are not taking a stern critique from coach Tubby Smith personally.

Senior guard Blake Hoffarber said after Saturday’s practice that Smith is simply trying to make the Gophers better.

When Minnesota’s losing streak reached four games in a defeat at home to Illinois, Smith criticized the performance of four of his eight regulars and the team’s overall mentality. He labeled his current group “boys” and last season’s seniors “men” while lamenting what he called a lack of maturity on the court this season.

Turnovers have been a big problem for the Gophers, with 35 giveaways over the last two games. Players say they have been too anxious and prone to rushing with the ball. They would like to relax a little and restore their confidence.
