Mercer pulls away from Florida Gulf Coast 74-61

MACON, Ga. (AP) — Brian Mills scored 22 points to lead Mercer over Florida Gulf Coast 74-61 in Atlantic Sun Conference action Saturday.

With the score tied at 54 and 7:04 left, the Bears (11-15, 8-7) went on an 11-1 run to pull ahead 65-55 with 3:09 to go. Mercer remained in front, 70-61, with less than a minute left and went 8 for 9 from the line in the final 1:26 to seal the win.

Justin Cecil added 14 points, Mark Hall had 12 and Bud Thomas 10 for the Bears, who have won five of their last six.

The Eagles (6-18, 3-12) finished 21 of 57 from the field (36.8 percent) and turned it over 12 times, leading to 19 Mercer points.

Christophe Varidel led Florida Gulf Coast with 18 points and Sherwood Brown chipped in 10. Kevin Cantinol grabbed 10 rebounds for the Eagles, who have lost five of their last six.

Mercer made only 6 field goals on 19 attempts (31.6 percent) in the second half.
