Norfolk State beats Howard 76-68, ends 3-game skid

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Rob Hampton scored 21 points and Kyle O’Quinn had his fifth straight double-double as Norfolk State snapped a three-game losing streak with a 76-68 win over Howard on Monday night.

O’Quinn had 20 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks for the Spartans (8-16, 6-6 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference), who blocked a season-high 10 shots.

The Bison (5-20, 3-9) shot only 32.1 percent in the first half (9 of 28), while Norfolk State shot 56.5 percent (13 of 23) en route to a 36-26 halftime lead.

In the second half, Howard played without leading scorer and rebounder Mike Phillips, who suffered an ankle injury just before halftime and finished with seven points.

The Bison got to 36-31 on a three-point play by Alphonso Leary with 18:18 remaining. Norfolk State responded with a 7-0 run, capped by a Hampton 3-pointer.

Leary and Anton Dickerson led Howard with 17 points apiece.
