MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — A 33-year-old Medford man has been sentenced to 712 years in prison after attacking his wife with a razor blade last May, cutting her wrist and causing her to nearly bleed to death.

The Mail Tribune reports that Hugo Ernesto Gonzalez pleaded guilty Monday to assault and being a felon in possession of a weapon after facing an initial charge of attempted murder.

Gonzalez blamed his behavior on drinking problems and apologized at a hearing in Jackson County Circuit Court.

A prosecutor said Gonzalez believed his wife was having an affair. The razor blade cut to his wife’s wrist went to the bone, requiring surgery. She was able to run to a neighbor, a sheriff’s deputy, to seek help.
