RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Growing demand has prompted truck manufacturer Freightliner to announce plans for 628 new jobs at two North Carolina plants.

The company said Wednesday that plans to fill 447 manufacturing jobs and 27 administrative positions at its factory in Mount Holly. It will also add 154 jobs to its plant in Gastonia.

Hiring for the new positions is expected to begin in March. The company hopes the new workers will let it increase daily production at both plants.

Freightliner CEO Martin Daum says the new jobs are a response to rising consumer demand.

Freightliner is owned by Portland, Ore.-based Daimler Trucks North America.
