LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas police say a man who opened fire near the exit of a busy freeway before officers shot him was shooting at a female acquaintance in a domestic dispute and was not aiming at passing motorists.

The alleged gunman and woman were in critical condition after the Thursday afternoon shooting on Interstate 15 near the Las Vegas Strip.

The couple were riding in a red sport utility vehicle with two male friends when the gunman began arguing with the woman. Police say the man punched one of his friends and assaulted the woman.

A friend who was driving parked the vehicle. Police say that’s when the man pulled out a shotgun and shot the woman as she ran from the car.

Officers previously said the gunman had opened fire on other motorists.
