LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) — A lawyer says a top Pakistani judge has ordered the arrest of the driver of a U.S. vehicle that struck and killed a Pakistani as it rushed to help an American detained in a pair of fatal shootings.

Asad Manzoor Butt is an attorney for the family of the bystander hit on Jan. 27. He says Lahore High Court chief justice Ijazur Rehman on Friday ordered the government to make an arrest because of a family court petition.

The U.S. has said little about the vehicular accident. It’s unlikely any Americans in the car remain in Pakistan.

The detention of the American in the shooting deaths is straining U.S.-Pakistan ties. Washington insists the man was defending himself against robbers and should be freed because he has diplomatic immunity.
