FC Dallas signs 16-year-old goalkeeper

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — FC Dallas has signed 16-year-old goalkeeper Richard Sanchez, a standout on the under-17 Mexican national team.

The deal announced Friday moves the California native and Texas resident from the FC Dallas developmental program he joined in 2009, when he left Spain’s Atletico Madrid under-16 squad.

Playing for the Mexican national youth team, Sanchez recently was selected the top goalkeeper at a tournament in Chile.

Sanchez will join Dallas in Orlando, Fla., this week, but will return to the Mexican team on March 6 as part of preparations for the this year’s FIFA Under-17 World Cup.

Sanchez is the sixth FC Dallas player signed from its youth program.
