Massachusetts defeats Rhode Island 66-60

KINGSTON, R.I. (AP) — Anthony Gurley scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half to lead Massachusetts in a 66-60 come-from-behind win over Rhode Island on Saturday.

The Minutemen (14-11, 6-6 Atlantic 10 Conference) trailed 31-23 at halftime and opened the second half on a 17-6 run to go up 40-37 on Raphiael Putney’s dunk with 11:29 left to play.

UMass increased its led to 11, 58-47, with 4:12 left, but Rhode Island used a 9-1 run to cut it to three, 59-56, on James Delroy’s free throw with 1:50 remaining.

The Minutemen then made seven free throws to seal it.

Gurley tallied 10 rebounds and UMass shot 52.2 percent in the second half (12 of 23).

Sampson Carter, Putney and Gary Correia added 11 points each for the Minutemen.

Delroy led the Rams (16-8, 7-5) with 15 points. Nikola Malesevic, Will Martell and Orion Outerbridge chipped in 10 points apiece for Rhode Island.
