SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Salem police say arson is behind a residential fire that left a 64-year-old man dead.

Authorities identified the victim as Robert Flores.

Lt. Steve Birr says the fire was intentional and police are investigating the Friday night death as a homicide.

Birr says Flores lived at the Center Street home.

According to Birr, neighbors knocked out windows in attempts to rescue Flores.

The Statesman Journal reports that firefighters found Flores unconscious and rushed him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The state medical examiner’s office has determined Flores died of smoke inhalation.
