MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The fight in Wisconsin over union rights is about more than pay and benefits in the public sector. It could also help solidify Republican power for years.

While Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s plan to eliminate collective bargaining rights for most public employees has galvanized Democrats and union members, the GOP could benefit by crippling a key source of campaign funding and volunteers for Democrats.

Mike McCabe of the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign says the move would “tilt the scales significantly in favor of the Republicans.” He says Republicans in other states could follow suit depending on the outcome in Wisconsin.

Walker has denied political motivations. But in an interview with The Associated Press, he acknowledged his proposal to allow workers to avoid mandatory dues could weaken union leaders’ power.
