LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The woman convicted of trying to extort cash and cars from University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino is preparing to appeal the case.
Lawyer David Nolan, who represents Karen Cunagin Sypher, on Monday filed a two-page notice of appeal in U.S. District Court in Louisville. The documents say they will ask the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals to consider the case.
A judge on Friday sentenced Sypher to 87 months in federal prison for trying to get millions in cash, cars and a house from Pitino to stay quiet about a sexual tryst between the two in 2003.
A jury convicted Sypher in August of extortion, lying to the FBI and retaliation against a witness.
She was also ordered to serve two years of supervised release and pay $600 in fines but does not have to pay restitution.
