Twins’ Mauer calls knee shots no big deal

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Joe Mauer says the lubricating shots he is receiving on his surgically repaired left knee are “not really that big of a deal.”

The Minnesota Twins catcher spoke to reporters on Wednesday morning before the team’s first full-squad workout. Mauer will take it easy for the next day or two to let the first shot take effect. He says he will need three or four in the series, which will be taken once a week.

Mauer had minor surgery to alleviate some swelling in his knee after last season. He says the shots are meant to increase lubrication and are more of a maintenance measure.

Mauer says he still isn’t sure when he will start catching in workouts or in games. But he says there’s plenty of time to get ready before the start of the regular season on April 1.
