SEATTLE (AP) — Boeing workers are awaiting an Air Force decision expected Thursday on a $35 billion contract to build 179 air refueling tankers.

Boeing is competing with the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company, known as EADS.

Boeing would use its 767 airframe, built in Everett and modified in Wichita, Kan. EADS would use an Airbus model modified at Mobile, Ala.

The contract could grow to a $100 billion deal if the Air Force buys more tankers to replace the aging KC-135 tankers.

Officials say about 50,000 jobs are at stake.
